Overview
Muktuk Kennels & Sled Dog Tours ... A Place for People Who Love Dogs Owned and operated by Frank Turner and Anne Tayler, Muktuk Kennels is located on the Takhini River, close to the "old Dawson Trail", the Takhini Hotsprings and the Yukon Quest Trail.
The ranch is surrounded by panoramic views of the mountains in the Ibex Valley, the Laberge Hills and Haeckel Hill. Nestled into an ox-bow on the river, the 100-acre ranch is bordered on three sides by the river. This location is ideal for mushing in the winter and for canoeing and swimming in the summer.
The main building is located near the river, with a cedar sauna tucked in behind it. Guests join the staff for meals in the main lodge, and all the mushing gear is located in the Dog Room. The home is built with Sitka spruce logs from Haines, Alaska (Yukon Alaska Log Homes).
The dogs are very close to the main lodge so that Muktuk can ensure they always have good care, and so that they know right away if there are any problems. Most of the time, the dogs are very quiet, except at dinner time and when the team is hooked up.
Frank and the crew will provide expert instruction and guiding, and Frank will share some of the secrets of running competitively in the Quest. Visitors will also learn about canine nutrition and care.
Muktuk is completely dedicated to giving their dogs the best possible care - from the birth of puppies, throughout their racing careers, and their retirement. They make a special effort to ensure that their "seniors" enjoy a comfortable retirement. Muktuk works closely with a vet in Whitehorse, along with an expert in naturopathic treatments, other specialists, and a nutritionist.
Frank named his kennel Muktuk, after a dear friend, Victor Kisoun, of Inuvik, brought him some muktuk for the dogs. Muktuk is an outer layer of fat found in the whales hunted along the arctic shores of Alaska, the Yukon and Northwest Territories.
